Ann Baker and her brother George were instrumental in getting restorations underway in the late 1840s. By then they were living close to St Peter’s at Hazelrigg House. They were both historians with a wide range of interests.
Neither were members of the Church of England. They worshipped at Kings Street Unitarian Chapel.
The following were some of George Gilbert Scott’s changes in the early 1850s:
1) The east end was rebuilt in a style more in keeping with the original building.
2) Flat ceilings inside the church were removed and all the roof timbers replaced.
3) On the outside the small doorway in the west wall of the tower was blocked and covered with stone, although it remained inside the church under wooden panelling.
4) The floor level in the nave was lowered to create a more traditional division between Chanel and nave.
5) Arched windows were reinstated in the south clerestory where needed.
6) Scott also designed the ornate wooden cover for the 14th century font.
